Chapter 7: Her Protector

Shiloh

Shiloh frantically searched the hospital waiting room for Foster. Her gaze flitted over worried mothers, whining children, and grim-faced fathers. Apparently, there were a lot of medical emergencies this evening in Hereford.

“What’s the matter?” Shayley’s high-waisted white dress was wrinkled from too many hours of sitting, and she was starting to look drowsy.

Shoot! I think the better question is what’s not the matter, sweetie? “I’m looking for Foster.” Shiloh tapped the toe of her boot. She couldn’t seem to catch a break. The guy was forever hovering around her and her sister. Now that she actually needed to speak with him, however, he was nowhere to be found. That figures.

“I sent him on a coffee run.” Shayley gave a gigantic yawn that she didn’t bother covering. It was nearly two in the morning, the time of day that most folks were past the point of caring how they looked.

“Pregnant gals can’t have caffeine,” Shiloh noted mechanically.

“I know, Mom.” Shayley stuck out her tongue. “The coffee’s for him. He needs to be awake when he drives us back to the B&B.”

Yeah, and that needs to happen right now! No more delays. No more waiting for the doctor to reappear with better news. Shiloh fidgeted with her watch, willing Foster to return quickly. She couldn’t afford to exit the room to track him down herself, because that would make Shayley vulnerable. There was no way Shiloh was leaving Shayley alone for even a minute now that her stalker was back on the prowl.

The moment Foster’s broad shoulders appeared in the entrance to the waiting room, Shiloh made a bee-line in his direction. Or tried to. At the last second, she had to hop out of the way of two boys playing on the floor with Matchbox cars.

“That’s some fancy footwork there, Marine.” Foster eyed her coolly over the top of his styrofoam coffee mug.

“Where’s my coffee?” she demanded irritably.

“Didn’t know you wanted any.” He took another sip.

“You could’ve asked.” Reaching greedily for his cup, she was relieved when he handed it over without a fight.

“Mmm!” She took a few sips, craving the bracing bite of flavor and snap of caffeine.

Foster watched her, smirking. “Someday you’re going to admit you like me.”

“Don’t press your luck.” She took one more sip and reluctantly handed it back. “We need to talk.”

“I thought that’s what we were doing.”

“Just shut up and listen.” She stepped closer and lowered her voice. “I am 99.999999% sure we just received a text message from Arrow Westfield.”

Foster’s jaw tightened, and his large hand shot out to close around her upper arm. “Where’s your cell phone?”

“Over there.” She nodded at her sister. “Shayley has it.”

“I’ll dispose of it. We need to get you out of here. Now!” He pivoted her toward the exit and gave her a gentle shove.

“But Shayley—”

“Got it.” He lifted his hand to his lips and gave two sharp, ear-piercing whistles that had everyone around them holding their hands to their ears and scowling in their direction.
